why do we do what we do?

I’ve always wanted to thank all the people who have supported my art path throughout the years.  Like I said in my newsletter, I paint because I am drawn to the visual language.  The evolution of the process, the discovery of marks, the mix and flux of materials, the shows, the sales, the love of being true to my passion keep me working.  You keep me working as well.  Those of you who have come to my shows, bought my work, taken my classes and  have encouraged me to keep working when it seemed pointless.  I love your questions, your comments your courage to ask.  Some artists say they have no need to show their work.  I find that hard to believe, because we all need to speak but also to be heard.family

When I was in school I filmed a video where I and a fellow student interviewed various artists.  The video was called, “Are you Satisfied?” and the final question I asked was, “Are you ever satisfied with your work?”  It was curious, because as you can imagine, no one was ever satisfied.

I still feel that way after working and producing for over 20 years. When I first start a piece, I feel a rush, an excitement a knowledge that this will be it.  The masterpiece that I have strived to achieve.  But as the work progresses and  I hit one of my middle points and it just becomes laborious work, I think, yes, this piece has it’s strong points, and I’m pretty happy with it.  Am I satisfied though? hell no, I’m already pining away for the next piece, the piece which will somehow make me feel whole. This piece will have the perfect composition. The colors will amaze, the images will impact, it will be the most powerful, beautiful, and WOW piece ever…..and then finally, I’ll be….,somewhat satisfied.

Are you every satisfied?
